JAMMU, July 6: A baby boy who was born at just 24 weeks of gestation and weighed only 600 grams has been discharged from SDDM Hospital in Channi Himmat Jammu after a remarkable recovery. He is believed to be the smallest baby ever reported in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Baby was born to a couple who had lost two previous babies due to prematurity. He had multiple complications, including immature lungs, brain, heart and gut, and required ventilator support for 50 days.
Dr Vikas Mahajan, the neonatologist who treated the Baby, said that he faced several challenges during the course of treatment. “He had severe respiratory distress and was at a high risk of bleeding, infection and brain damage. He needed blood transfusions and medications to stabilize his condition,” said Dr Mahajan.
He said the hospital also provided financial assistance to the family. The Baby was discharged from the Hospital with a weight of 2.3 kg at 2.5 months of age.
Dr Mahajan said that the Baby’s survival was a miracle, as the chances of survival for babies born before 24 weeks are very low. “He is a fighter and has defied all odds. We are happy that he is going home healthy and safe,” the doctor added.
