SRINAGAR, Oct 12: The administration today stopped soil mining in the Khushalpora Chendan Sangrama area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district following allegations that excessive mining was rendering nearby areas vulnerable to potential danger.
The ban comes a day after the ‘Excelsior’ reported that unregulated solid excavation was not only endangering the local population but also destabilising a major electrical transmission tower, thereby putting the entire area at risk of a catastrophic event.
In response, Sarfaraz Shaban, District Mineral Officer for Baramulla, and his team visited the site and issued on-the-spot directions to halt mining operations after a thorough review. “Based on the story, I went to inspect the site along with my team, and we observed that the tower is approximately 100 metres away from the extraction site. We have already issued an order to cease further work. We have stopped the work as we are in the process of measuring the amount of soil that has been extracted and the corresponding royalty deposits,” he said.
