Jammu, Apr 23: Laying emphasis on the need to understand the relation of mind-body axis in relation to cardiovascular diseases and its prevention through spiritual and religious healing, Head Department of Cardiology GMCH Jammu Dr Sushil Sharma held a day long cardiac awareness-cum-health check up camp on the occasion of 7th foundation day of Sarv Shakti Chandi Mata Mandir, Dhammi Nagrota Jammu with the main aim of educating the ever growing importance of mind body practices and spirituality in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular diseases so that the same message is conveyed to the younger generations to come. More than 800 people were screened, evaluated, diagnosed and free medicines were given as per the requirements.
While interacting with the people, Dr Sushil stated that Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) currently account for one in three deaths worldwide. The risk of developing CVDs is highly influenced by lifestyle-related factors such as a high consumption of unhealthy food, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and harmful use of alcohol. These disadvantageous health behaviours are becoming more prevalent in LMICs due to elevated exposures and limited preventive services.
He maintained that Religious and spiritual (R/S) affiliations may be an underlying factor for CVD risk variations. “R/S affiliations play an important role and these beliefs are known to shape one’s view of the world and behavioural patterns and therefore have potential to both positively and negatively affect one’s health .Positive aspects include encouragement to live healthily, provision of mechanisms to regulate stress, and contribution to building a social support network ..This could be the result of discouragement of alcohol consumption and smoking or encouragement by religious leaders to be physically active,” Dr Sharma said.
Others who were part of the Camp include Dr Nasir Ali Choudhary, Dr Anitipal Singh, Dr Dhaneshwer kapoor, Dr Dinesh Kumar, Dr Sachin Kudyar, Dr Suransh Behl, Dr Akashdeep and Dr Ankita Khajuria.
