NEW DELHI, May 8: Milk production in India has increased from 121.8 million tonne in 2010-11 to 146.3 million tonne in 2014-15, registering average annual growth of 4.7 per cent. During the same period, milk production by Dairy Co-operative Societies has increased by 9.8 per cent, touching 37.95 million tonne per day. Among states, Uttar Pradesh continues to remain the leading milk producer, followed by Rajasthan and then Gujarat, whereas the per capita demand was reported maximum in Punjab, followed by Haryana in 2013-14. The per capita availability of milk in India was 322 gram/day in 2014-15. The consumption of milk and milk products varies from place to place and within different sections of people in India. In order to complement and supplement the efforts made by the states/UT’s to promote Animal Husbandry among farmers to enhance production of milk and improve per-capita availability, Delhi government has initiated several schemes including National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development. National Dairy Plan-I (NDP) is contributing 90 per cent of the milk production in India. The NDP-I aims to meet the demand of milk through genetic upgradation of bovines and strengthening village based procurement system. (UNI)
