Srinagar, May 8: Militants this evening killed a National Conference (NC) worker and Panch in South Kashmir district of Kulgam while police recovered body of a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant who was injured in an ambush in Tral two day ago.
DIG, South Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, told Excelsior that militants fired at NC worker and Panch Gul Mohammad Bhat at Wanpo in district Kulgam this evening. Bhat was removed to nearby Wanpo hospital but doctors referred him to Srinagar for treatment. He, however, died on way to Srinagar near Awantipora as he had received two bullets in his chest.
Kumar said that a burka clad militant entered Bhat’s hardware shop at Wanpo on the National Highway and fired at him from a pistol. The militants fled away after carrying out the attack.
Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Army have launched an operation against the militants responsible for the killing of Bhat.
Two Panchayat members, one Panchayat Inspector and a Lambardar of a village were killed last month ahead of elections in South Kashmir last month leading low voter turnout in Pulwama district.
Police today recovered body of a JeM militant from an orchard in Panzu village of Tral in Pulwama district. The militant was injured during an encounter with Tral police and Army two days ago.
DIG Kumar identified the JeM militant as Syed Maviya of Pakistan. He said that the militant was injured in an ambush laid by Awantipora police and Army at Dadsara-Amirabad on the night of May 6.
Militants had fired at the troops during the ambush and the fire was returned by troops but militants fled under the cover of darkness.
On May 7 morning, troops recovered one AK-47 rifle of a militant who was injured in the ambush but fled with other militants.
A Police spokesman said that Maviya was one of the militants involved in the killing of Lumbardar Mohammad Anwar at village Amlar, Tral ahead of polls in South Kashmir last month.
In the meantime, Police and Army in Sopore today recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from Hafruda forests of North Kashmir.
A defence spokesman said that Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police Handwara and 31 Rashtriya Rifles of 7 sector Army conducted searches in Hafruda forests during which arms and ammunition was recovered.
The recovered arms and ammunition include three pistols, six pistol magazines, 10 pistol rounds, 12 chinese grenades, three RPG round, two mortar rounds, five explosive rods, two compasses and administrative stores.
