Militant killed in Handwara, 5 CRPF men injured

SRINAGAR, July 26: A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Handwara area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today while militants snatched four rifles from former Congress leader’s house and five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured in a grenade attack in South Kashmir.

The gun battle broke out after militants fired upon the security forces during searches of the area. One militant was killed as security forces retaliated.
Militants this evening snatched four SLRs from policemen guarding a former Congress leader’s house in South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Sources said that a group of at least 7 armed militants raided the room of policemen guarding the residence of former Congress leader Mohammad Shafi Banday at Bunbazar, Shopian this evening. They said that two cops were on duty at the time of the raid and they were beaten up by the militants.
The militants decamped with a box in which four SLRs, 8 magazines and 300 rounds of ammunition were kept. They later posted a picture of these rifles on social media.
Security forces immediately reached to the spot and a massive search operation was launched against the militants responsible for the weapon snatching. The two cops were picked up by police for questioning.
Militants hurled a grenade on a paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Bijbehara town in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district today injuring five personnel.
Militants hurled a grenade on the CRPF personnel in Goriwan area of Bijbehara this afternoon. The grenade exploded with a bang injuring 5 CRPF men of 90th battalion. They were taken to Sub-District hospital Bijbehara for treatment.  They have been identified as Ominder Singh, Pankaj Kumar, Nitin Kumar, B Kumar and Yoginder Singh.
A massive operation has been launched by the security forces against the militants responsible for the attack.
Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) has claimed responsibility for the attack on a CRPF party in Bijbehara. “Cadres of the outfit today lobbed a grenade on CRPF bunker at Zerpora Bijbehara. In the attack, more than five CRPF men suffered injuries,” the LeT spokesperson said in a statement.
Security forces today detected an IED at Handoora Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The IED was planted by militants on Handoora-Tral road. The IED is weighing about 20 kilogrammes  was detonated by the Bomb Disposal Squad.
