MIER organizes workshop on ‘Elimination of Violence Against Women & Girls’

JAMMU, Jan 22: Shrimati Shanti Gupta, Centre for Women Studies (SSGCWS), MIER, organized a one-day workshop on the theme “Leadership Among Women and Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.”
The resource person was Mehran Khan, Chief Executive ELFA International along with his young and dynamic team. Prof Indu Kilam, Senior Advisor ELFA International, also graced the occasion.
Dr Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson MIER, chaired the session. HoDs of various Departments of the College along with the faculty and students of the UG and PG Deptts attended the workshop. The Principal and the academic managers of Model Academy School were also present in the workshop.
Khan and his team discussed the significance of celebrating womanhood and said women should have their own independent identity at home, work and in society. He highlighted the different causes of violence against women such as gender biasness, inequality, lack of empowerment, silence and cultural norms and taboos with the active participation of the audience. Mr Khan urged the participants to take an oath to stand-up against violence and harassment of women.
Prof Indu Kilam, Senior Advisor ELFA, shared statistics related to violence against women in India and worldwide. She talked about the importance of the workshop for raising the voice against women violence and harassment.
The team of ELFA conducted different activities, games and shared real life inspirational stories for providing strategies to eliminate violence against women and to break the long drawn silence among women.
Dr Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson, presented a memento to the ELFA team and appreciated their efforts.
Earlier, Monika Rathore, Coordinator CWS MIER, introduced Mehran Khan as an international development practitioner who has worked with different international organizations like Help Age, Aga Khan Foundation and Mercy Corp to carry out various projects for youth and vulnerable groups.
The programme was conducted by Priyanka Choudhary, a B Ed student who also presented a formal vote of thanks.
