Mercury drops across Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 10: The minimum temperatures remained below sub-zero and dropped slightly in most parts of the Kashmir valley today.
A Meteorological Department official said that the mercury settled at minus 1.6 degree Celsius against previous night’s minus 1.2 degree Celsius and normal of 0.2 degree Celsius for this time of the year.
The temperature this season, especially last month, consistently remained far below normal. On January 31, the mercury plunged to minus 8.8 degree Celsius, the coldest January night recorded in Srinagar in 30 years.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 3.8 degree Celsius against minus 4.3 degree Celsius the previous night while the mercury settled at minus 4.0 degree Celsius in Pahalgam against 2.2 degree Celsius the previous night. Kokernag recorded a low of minus 3.5 degree Celsius against minus 2.5 degree Celsius the previous night.
The mercury also settled at minus 1.8 degree Celsius in Kupwara against minus 1.6 degree Celsius the previous night while Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.0 degree Celsius against minus 3.5°C the previous night.
The weatherman has forecast mainly dry weather over the plains of J&K in the next week. “Mainly dry weather is expected on the plains of J&K,” the weatherman said.
