Medical colleges

Sir,
It is a welcome move that the State Government has set the process of making five new medical colleges functional from the upcoming academic session. The opening of these 5 GMCs and two SCIs will give a great boost to health sector in the State which is presently in a sorry state.
The two premiere medical colleges already functioning in Jammu and Srinagar usually remain crowded as their are no standard institutes to share the burden. Besides, there are not all facilities which are needed to provide quality care to patients. The heavy rush of patients in these colleges has at times resulted in doctor-attendant brawls forcing medical fraternity to go on flash strikes thereby further compounding the problems of patients.
The doctors too then damn their own profession. The opening of these colleges in other districts like Kathua, Doda and Anantnag will give a great relief to patients hailing from rural areas. Critical patients from these areas often die on their way to city hospitals as they do not get timely treatment.
There are opportunities for the medical students who want to serve in Health Department. The intake capacity of these colleges will go to 500 seats which means a sizeable number of students will be available to serve the State in coming times.
The only precaution that the Government needs to take is to ensure that these colleges are manned by competent people and not by those who wield political or money power. Otherwise the system will stink further.
Yours etc…
