SRINAGAR, July 26: In a major academic achievement for Government Medical College, Srinagar, the Medical Council of India has accorded approval to the start of diploma course in Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGO) at the college.
Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports, Taj Mohi-ud-Din had been pleading for the start of the course in view of the heavy rush and deficiency of trained staff in Gynaecology in the state.
The Minister today directed referring 12 vacancies to Board of Professional Entrance Examinations so that selection process of candidates gets a kick start and the course is started at the earlier.
The start of DGO at GMC would help in overcoming the shortage of Gynaecologist’s and Obstetrics in the state which are in huge demand particularly in rural and hilly areas.
It may be recalled that due to the persistent efforts of Mr. Taj, the Centre recently increased the intake capacity of MBBS seats in the Government run medical colleges in the state by 150.
