POONCH, Aug 17: Taking serious note of the dumping city garbage from Poonch at the bank of river Pulast (Poonch River), Sanatan Dharma Sabha Poonch and Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat, a social activist, have sought immediate intervention of the District Administration.
In a letter flashed to the Deputy Commissioner Poonch and the NGT, they said that MC Poonch is committing grave violation of NGT norms by dumping city garbage at the river site thus polluting the water body, posing serious life threat to the human beings, the animal and aquatic life.
Bhat said that he has been fighting for more than two years in the National Green Tribunal-NGT. On the NGTs direction DC Poonch on April 8, 2025 directed Tehsildar Poonch Haveli to recover Rs 162.9 lakhs as Environmental Compensation -EC from CEO MC Poonch. Till date neither the compensation has been recovered, nor this illegal waste dumping near Poonch river around SK Bridge has been stopped.
He said local Hindu Religious Organization (SD Sabha) has also raised concern on this issue. They also raised the issue before District Administration and CEO, MC Poonch but no action has been take so far.
He further pointed out that JCBs are being used during night hours to push the waste into river to destroy the evidence which is again a criminal act as per various provisions of BNS & MSW Rules 2016.
They said the MC Poonch has already acquired over 12 kanals of land near village Kassalian but they are not dumping the city waste there. They have sought the intervention of the District Administration into the urgent matter.
