Man gets 2 years imprisonment for abetment to suicide by wife

UDHAMPUR, Aug 29:  Principal District and Sessions Court Udhampur today awarded two years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 to Jeevan Singh, son of Tej Ram of Dharmthal Chenani, holding him guilty of abetment to suicide of his wife.
After hearing PP   for the State whereas Advocate Kiran Chouhan appeared for the accused person, the court also awarded one year rigorous imprisonment to accused under section 498-A RPC and a fine of two thousand. However both the sentence will run concurrently.
Veena Devi ,  wife of accused Jeevan Singh ,  had been married  with accused in 2006 but  the husband and in-laws of the victim harassed her on several occasions and tortured her as a result of which she jumped to death  in Tawi river in Chenani tehsil  on  August 23, 2012 . She had suffered grave head injuries. She  had strained relations with her husband.
The  District and Sessions  Judge,   K S Parihar  said that  `no doubt accused  is a first time offender or has three children to look after , but it is also true that he is responsible for the situation, so he deserves no mercy. It is proved beyond doubt the convict had driven his wife to suicide.  Accused abetted the suicide by creating circumstances through his habits.”
