KATHUA , June 4: A man, who was injured in a group clash over a land dispute in Kathua district last month, succumbed to his injuries at his residence, triggering protests by Gujjars, who blocked the Jammu-Pathankote National Highway for two hours at Khrot More near here today.
Mubarak Ali was attacked at Chak Sajan area of the district on May 18 in a group clash over the land dispute, following which he was hospitalized. However, he was discharged from the hospital few days back but he died at his residence last night.
Ali’s death triggered protests by Gujjar community members against the State Government and police for its failure to arrest the culprits.
The protesters blocked the highway demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the attack on Ali.
Senior police and civil administration officers rushed to the spot and controlled the situation after promising the protesters to setup a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
Following an assurance by the authorities, the agitating Gujjars dispersed from the spot and lifted the blockade.
Tension had erupted between two sections who staked claim on a disputed piece of land in the village, which was “illegally” occupied by Gujjars, officials said.
