Malai villagers facing threat of land slides, soil erosion

KISHTWAR, Oct 3: The inhabitants of village Malai in tehsil Drabshalla of Kishtwar district have demanded that immediate steps be taken to save the village from further devastation in coming winter where the heavy rains and landslides have already created a havoc and land slides threat looms large.
In a statement issued here, today Tara Chand, Chairman, Panchayat Halqa Sangna said the villagers are facing many hardships as the landslides threat looms large in the area. He said already a lot of devastation has been caused by the natural calamities in the village and despite the plea of villagers to shift the population to alternative place no action ahs been taken as the village is almost uninhabitable. The file for compensation by the then DC Kishtwar is lying in Divisional Commissioner’s Office for a pretty long time he added.
Seeking immediate intervention of the Government, he demanded that the steps be taken to protect the land from erosion by taking the environmentalists into confidence or the villagers be shifted to an alternative place so that they are saved from any major catastrophe in the area.
He said the representatives of the area have given many representations to concerned authorities and the DC Kishtwar last time had also constituted a team of officers to assess the loss and ascertain the situation.
Tara Chand said for last two years they were pursuing the authorities in Kishtwar and Jammu and instead of realizing the gravity of situation they are turning a deaf ear to it.
He warned that the authorities will be responsible in case any catastrophe takes place in the area.
