SRINAGAR, Jan 21: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today urged India and Pakistan to end border hostilities and make the State a bridge for peace and friendship.
Addressing the attestation cum passing out parade at Subsidiary Training Centre, Sheeri, here today, the Chief Minister said: “In our State, on borders, people are making bunkers or leaving borders. Schools are being closed and children are jailed in their homes. It is my request to our Prime Minister and Pakistan that don’t make J&K an arena for war, make it a bridge for friendship like in past we opened various roads like Muzaffarabad and Rawlakot for business. (Click here to watch video) This blood bath should end now so that children can go back to schools and people will live peacefully in their homes and do their work.
Mehbooba said that it is painful that instead of demanding good schools, hospitals and roads, the people in border areas are demanding bunkers for safety. “How painful it is that when they should be demanding good schools, hospitals and roads, the people of border areas in the State are asking for bunkers to protect their lives”, she said while expressing her deep anguish over the loss of lives on the borders during the heavy shelling of past few days.
The Chief Minister said that it is the people of Jammu and Kashmir who are being killed on either side of the border due to cross border firing. “It is our bad luck that this State is the only State which is between two countries and it has become a reason of conflict for India and Pakistan.. That is why from past few days due to firing at borders, many people were martyred, our civilians and children were killed. Obviously, same will be the situation on other side of the border. At the end, it is the people of J&K who are being killed”, she said.
Mehbooba said that on one hand country is progressing and on the other hand there is blood bath on our borders. “On our borders blood bath is happening while as country is on the path of development, new hospitals, schools, colleges, roads are made and our PM always talks about development. But opposite is happening here”, she said.
She asked police to be patient while fighting for the improvement of the situation in the State. “While fighting for the improvement of situation in the Valley, you have to sometimes face your own people or face little children as well. So, you have to keep patience at that time”, she said.
Mehbooba said that local youth joining militancy is a big challenge and efforts should be to bring them home. “The infiltration in which militants are coming from other side and our children who are picking up guns here is another big challenge for us. Our endeavor should be to convince the children who have picked up guns to bring them back to their homes”, she said.
She said for fighting militancy civilian casualties have to be prevented. “To fight back militancy, you have to take restraint so that no civilian casualty takes place”, she said.
“Drug addiction is another big problem here and women are being harassed like recently in Kathua, a minor girl was harassed. We have to suspend the concerned SHO of the area and a team has been set up to nab the culprit behind the incident”, she said.
The Chief Minister asked police to give protection and justice to women who are being harassed. “You have to always remember that you are face to face to your own people. You have to protect and give justice to women who are being harassed. I congratulate you and your families and you should truly protect and serve your State”, she said.
Complimenting the cops on passing out into a new field of duty, Mehbooba asked them to perform their jobs with sincerity and dedication. She said it was a matter of pride that these boys have come through a transparent recruitment process and most of them are highly qualified. “You should use your good backgrounds to ensure that no injustice, howsoever small, is done to a commoner in a routine day to day manner”, she said.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister felicitated the best performing recruits in various disciplines. In all, 473 jawans passed out today from the Subsidiary Training Centre, Sheeri after completing the Basic Recruit Training Course for Recruit Constables.
