Srinagar, Nov 1: A major tragedy was averted at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital Srinagar after a heap of hospital scrap caught fire inside the premises of the building, creating panic among the attendants this morning.
As the smoke, initially being unnoticed, emerged out of the building housing several OPDs around 11 in the morning, the administration swung into the action.
The local manpower initially made the attempts to douse the fire which mysteriously emerged from the spot. The hospital administration also called the fire tenders which reached the spot after the fire was considerably brought under control.
“We spotted the smoke; initially, we thought that it was coming out of the boiler, but then when the smoke kept on raging from the spot, we personally made the efforts to douse the flames; the fire was not major and had emerged from the hospital scrap that has been kept there,” said a sanitation worker at the hospital, adding that if the fire had emerged during the night, it could have caused severe damage.
An attendant at the spot told Excelsior that nobody was giving attention to the smoke rising up from the building. “I told a security guard and only after that they rushed to the spot,” he said.
By the time the flames were doused, it had created panic among the patients who had thronged the hospital for follow-ups. The fire tenders later made sure that nothing dangerous was left at the spot.
Medical Superintendent, SMHS Dr Nazir Chowdhary told Excelsior that it was a minor fire incident that had emerged from the scrap stored at that very spot and was brought under control by the local staff here at the hospital. “No untoward incident was reported due to the fire as it was brought under control locally, immediately,” he said.
