JAMMU, Dec 25: Mahajan Sabha Gandhi Nagar today celebrated Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan’s 133rd birth anniversary at Mehar Chand Mahajan Park, Gandhi Nagar with solemnity and fervor.
Former Mayor of Jammu, Chander Mohan Gupta was the chief guest of the function during which the Mayor called for emulating values and principles of justice, nationalism, simplicity and social reforms which Justice Mahajan pursued throughout his life.
He said Jammu and Kashmir in particular and Indian Nation as a whole cannot forget the services of Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan first as member of the Radcliffe Boundary Commission and then as Prime Minister of J&K Princely State that culminated into state’s accession with India. He said in the memory of Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan, High Court Chowk has been named after him and a Statue also installed there.
Chief patron of the Sabha Jugal Mahajan paid rich tribute to Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan and described him as a great patriot with whose wisdom J&K became a part of India. He spoke about his simplicity and social reforms especially in Mahajan Biradari and said that he was against unnecessary extravaganza in marriages and this should be followed by all biradaris even now.
Ravi Rohmetra, a noted columnist, spoke about the life history of Justice Mehar Chand and recalled his contributions in different capacities like member of Radcliffe Boundary commission on Punjab and Prime Minister of J&K. He said as Chief Justice of India Justice Mahajan laid foundation stone of the existing Supreme Court Complex in 1954.
Remembering Justice Mahajan, KB Jandial (retired IAS officer) said that it was he as a member of Radcliffe Boundary Commission for Punjab who ensured road connectivity to Jammu through Gurdaspur without which accession of the State with India could not had been possible.
