Lone inspects ongoing works at GCET

JAMMU, Feb 6: Minister for Higher Education Mohammad Akbar Lone today visited Government College Engineering and Technology (GCET) Jammu and inspected pace of work on under construction Rs. 4.65 crore Administrative Block. He also inspected newly constructed workshop building of the college completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 5.80 crore.
The Minister directed the executing agency Jammu and Kashmir Project Corporation (JKPCC) to speed up the pace of work and complete all on-going works in a time bound manner.
While taking review of various sanctioned and proposed projects for the GCET Jammu, the Minister said that a Project and Monitoring Cell will be constituted in Higher Education Department to oversee the construction of education infrastructure, besides acting as a facilitator in the release of funds and solve difficulties faced by the executing agencies.
Mr. Lone also visited various blocks and took stock of the facilities available for the students. He directed the concerned to shift machinery from old campus to newly constructed workshop within a fort-night.
During inspection of different blocks of the college, the Minister stressed for proper maintenance of the workshops and labs. He also stressed for maintaining cleanliness in and around the college.
Earlier, the Minister took stock of overall working of the college in a meeting with the Head of the Departments.
He was informed that the institution offers admissions to 160 students annually in computer, electrical, mechanical, electronics and communication and civil engineering branches. He was also informed that the college has already submitted a proposal to increase its strength to 300 seats with intake of 60 students in each stream from next academic session.
While discussing the vacancies available against teaching and non-teaching posts, Mr. Lone directed the management to fill the vacant posts on contractual basis till the regular appointments were made by the recruitment agencies.
The Minister was further informed that the college also holds the distinction of being the first degree level engineering institute in Government sector. Out of 19 batches of students admitted from the year 1994 to 2012, 15 batches have passed out from this institution. He was informed that a large number of pass out students of GCET are working with reputed private and Government organizations at State and national level.
The Management of the college also projected various demands including opening of J&K Bank Branch, macadamization of road form Seri-Pantha to college and ambulance facility.
Mr. Lone assured them that these demands would be taken with the concerned departments for early redressal. He directed the management of the institution to come up with the proposal with regard to requirement of furniture.
Special Secretary, Higher Education, Principal of GCET Jammu and other concerned officers accompanied the Minister during his visit.
