UDHAMPUR, Aug 22: Locals of Jakhani area today protested against Udhampur Municipal Committee (UMC) seeking shifting of garbage dumping station adjoining Jakhani National Highway near Kali Mata Temple Udhampur.
The protesting people raised slogans against the Udhampur Municipal Committee (UMC) and demanded that the garbage dumping station should be shifted at least one kilometer from Jakhani.
The garbage dumping site is an inhabited area and it is also the same spot on the banks of River Tawi from where filtration of water takes place for supplying the same to Udhampur town.
More ironic is the fact that PHE Department. has not bothered to complaint to the administration for checking garbage dumping at the site and even Pollution Control Department has also ignored the situation.
The locals alleged that a number of water born diseases like jaundice, diarrhoea and skin ailments are affecting people because of polluted water being supplied due to garbage dumping but there was no action from the authorities.
The protestor threatened to block the National Highway if the Udhampur Municipal Committee (UMC) does not take early action against the problem.
