LG inaugurates ‘Carbon Neutral Ladakh’ summit

LEH, Mar 2: ‘Development path of Ladakh should be different and boundaries should be defined as it is important to develop and also preserve the pristine ecology and fragile eco-system of Ladakh’.
This was stated by Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh, Radha Krishna Mathur during the inauguration of the four-day ‘Carbon Neutral Ladakh-A New Beginning’ summit, here today.
Lt Governor stated that the objective is to seek expertise to embark on a developmental path with the idea of conserving the indigenous culture and tradition of Ladakh. He added that the objective of the summit is to develop solutions rather than just having theoretical discussions. He also announced that NITI Aayog has agreed to set up a committee that will focus on making Ladakh carbon neutral.
Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor LAHDC Leh Gyal P Wangyal while speaking on the occasion expressed hope of achieving the development process of the region in-sync with the task of preservation of tradition and culture of Ladakh.
Advisor to LG UT Ladakh Umang Narula, Commissioner/ Secretary Ladakh Rigzin Samphel and Director GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) Dr RS Rawal also spoke on the occasion. The participants of the summit include policymakers, researchers, academics, practitioners and civil society groups.
A short film produced by the UT administration titled ‘Carbon Neutral Ladakh’ was screened to outline the scope for discussions.
Meanwhile, the LG took a meeting of officers of University of Kashmir (KU) in Ladakh and University of Ladakh (LU) including Controller of Examination, KU Prof Farooq Ahmad Mir along-with the two Rectors of campuses of Kashmir University in Ladakh and Controller of Examination, LU Deskyong Namgyal, regarding the status of UG University Examinations of the students of different semesters and batches and the declaration of result of these examinations.
Prof Farooq Ahmad Mir presented a detailed status of examinations and results. He also apprised the LG Ladakh about the establishment of Examination sub offices at two satellite campuses of the KU in which local human resource was engaged to address all the grievances of the students of this region.
The LG was also informed that the conduct as well as result declaration of all the semester of the students of this region are much ahead to the students of Kashmir region. A patient hearing was given by the Hon’ble LG who appreciated the efforts put in by University of Kashmir to address the concern of the students of Ladakh.
On the advice of the LG, Prof Mir and Prof Namgyal were entrusted to prepare a road-map for holding these exams in future within the time frame so as to address grievances of the students of Ladakh.
Earlier on Sunday, the LG chaired the First Planning Board meeting of UT Ladakh. The meeting deliberated on key factors of every department of the four-month-old Union Territory for its overall sustainable development.
The discussions widely covered all the areas concerning Education, Health, Communication, Connectivity, Ecology, Environment, Agriculture, Water, Infrastructure, Sports, Disaster Management, Wild-life, Power, Rural & Urban Development, Industry & Commerce, Tourism, Textiles, Handicraft & Handloom, Information Technology and others.
Mathur began with the announcement of implementation of the setting up of the Inter-District Advisory Council for proper planning and execution of various initiatives. He stated that the administration has to work for the economic upliftment of the poor and infrastructure development of roadways, railways, airways and OFC.
