SRINAGAR, Sept 23: Security forces today arrested a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant in Handwara area of Kupwara while a search operation was carried out this evening in Sopore area of Baramulla district.
An official said a militant of LeT was apprehended in a joint operation by Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) at Drushpora forests of Handwara this morning along with a 9mm pistol.
A Srinagar-based spokesman of Army said the militant has been identified as Bilal Ahmed Nazar, resident of Chhan Mohalla Badrahar in Handwara. He said on the instance of militant, an AK 47 and other war-like stores were recovered. The militant is in the custody of police.
Meanwhile, a search operation was carried by SOG and Army’s 52 Rashtriya Rifles at Amargarh and Choora neighbourhoods of Sopore. Sources said the security forces conducted searches and also stopped vehicles for frisking.
“We had an input about the presence of a wanted militant in the area and that is why search and cordon operation was launched,” a senior police officer said. However, after extensive searches, the operation was called off as no one was found.
