JAMMU, Nov 2: A day after major clash between the protesting workers of Chenani-Nashri tunnel and the Police, the administration today succeeded to persuade the agitators to allow work with an assurance of considering their genuine demands positively.
The agreement was reached out during a meeting between the Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Shantmanu and representatives of workers union as well as Leighton Wellspun Pvt Ltd.
IGP Jammu Rajesh Kumar, DIG Udhampur-Reasi Range Gareeb Dass, DC Udhampur Yasha Mudgal and Labour Commissioner also attended the meeting wherein the workers were represented by CITU general secretary Om Parkash.
“After a detailed meeting, the union leader agreed to allow workers resume work on the Chenani-Nashri tunnel while the administration assured to look into their genuine demands,” Div Com, Shantmanu told the Excelsior.
Pertinent to mention that the agitating workers are demanding equal wages for equal work, release of their colleagues from the police custody and reinstatement of terminated workers.
Fourteen policemen and around three dozen workers were injured during a major clash between the two at Chenani town. Police had also detained 25 workers.
Meanwhile, State president of Bahujan Samaj Party Tulsi Dass Langeh strongly condemned the police action against the protesting workers and urged the management of Leighton company to initiate dialogue with the labour representatives.
Former Minister Thakur Randhir Singh has demanded immediate release of the workers from Police custody and positive consideration of their demands under Labour laws. He also appealed the Chief Minister to personally look into the matter and direct the Leighton management not to harass the workers.
