Legal Metrology imposes Rs 29300 penalty

KATHUA, Aug 2: A team of the Legal Metrology Department Kathua under the supervision of the Assistant Controller Legal Metrology Kathua Ajay K. Verma  conducted intensive checking of various bussiness establishments especially  provisional stores, Karyana stores, Atta chakis,  ration depot, sweet shops, veg./fruit seller, bar and restaurant shopkeepers selling mineral water cold drinks and snacks on  National Highway from Lakhanpur to Chan  Arrorian, Chack Sajjan, College Road  Kathua, Shiva Nagar, Chann Morian, Hiranagar, Dayalachack, Challan, Mandli, Thanger   and  adjoining areas.
During inspections  23 traders were booked for violation of various provisions of J&K Weights and Measures Enforcement Act 1997 and Package Commodities Rules and 25 challans were compounded and penalty of Rs 29300 was imposed on the erring traders.
Besides this, department directed all the traders to use only verified weights and measures for business transactions and ensure that  all the package commodities sold to the consumers  must bear the MRP, PKD, Net Contents and complete address  and consumer care  number.
The department has also warned the unscrupulous traders to desist from using unfair trade practices to cheat the innocent consumers and also appealed to the consumers to remain vigilant while purchasing the commodities.
