JAMMU, Apr 27: Legal Metrology has come to the rescue of a retired Government employee, who was cheated by lucrative advertisement.
According to Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller Legal Metrology (Consumer Protection), a retired Government employee from Srinagar got attracted by one such lucrative advertisement issued by Delhi Sales Corporation, which assured him a return of Rs 15000 to Rs 1 lakh for part time job. The retired Government employee even invested Rs 95,000 on the assurance of the service provider.
Initially, the complainant managed to perform as per the desire of the service provider but later he was compelled to sell the finished goods to the service provider only at the low price on the will and whim of the advertiser. The complainant was further asked to invest more and sign agreement to which he refused and accordingly denied supply of raw material.
The matter came to the notice of Joint Controller Legal Metrology Amar Singh, who called the service provider to show cause as to why the necessary sanctions may not be given to lodge the complaint in the competent court as the service provider has adopted restrictive trade practices to deceive the consumer in violation of Consumer Protection Act.
The offender pleaded guilty and refunded the whole amount of Rs 95000 to the aggrieved person and assured the department not to indulge in these kind of practices in future.
Similarly, a consumer aggrieved of being supplied defective shoes costing Rs 2400 by Liberty company through its dealer at Gandhi Nagar, filed complaint with the Legal Metrology Department mentioning that the dealer refused to replace the defective shoes.
Since the consumer was having a proper bill for the purchase of shoes, the matter was taken with management of Liberty company and consumer was refunded full amount of the shoes on the same day.
The department has appealed to all the consumers to be careful in investment of their hard earned money and don’t get attracted to misleading advertisements. The consumers have also been advised to keep their all bills in safe custody to get redressal of their complaints if any at the later stage.
