Lectures, drives organised to pay tribute to Dr Ambedkar

JAMMU, Apr 13: On the eve of Ambedkar Jayanti, a series of programmes were organized across Jammu region to pay tribute to Dr B R Ambedkar, highlighting his enduring legacy of social justice, equality and constitutional values.
The SC, ST and OBC Cell, University of Jammu, organized a seminar on the theme “Remembering Bharat Ratna (Dr) Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar – The Maker of Modern India”. Prof Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the SC/ST and OBC Cell, University of Jammu, delivered the presidential address.
Prof S K Sharma, former Head, Department of Law, Dean Faculty of Law, University of Jammu, and Swami Chair Professor, Swami Vivekananda Chair, Central University of Jammu, graced the occasion as the chief guest while Meenakshi Slathia, Deputy Advocate General, J&K and Ladakh High Court, attended the seminar as the guest of honour.
Among those present on the occasion were Prof Seema Rometra, Director Law School; Prof Pankaj Kumar, Honorary Director USIC; Prof Haq Nawaz, Head, Department of Chemistry; Prof Virender Koundal, Director DSRS; Prof Romesh Kumar, Head, Department of Mathematics and Dean Faculty of Mathematical Sciences; and several faculty members.
A tribute programme was organised at Ramgarh in Samba district. The event was presided over by senior Congress leader and former minister Yashpal Kundal, while former minister and senior Congress leader Mula Ram attended as the chief guest. A large number of Congress workers, local residents and members of the Dalit community were present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Kundal said that Dr Ambedkar played a historic role in securing voting rights for women, promoting the right to education and uplifting the downtrodden sections of society. Mula Ram said that Dr Ambedkar dedicated his life to ensuring dignity and rights for the Dalit community.
In Jammu city, Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader and former JMC Councillor Sanjay Kumar Baru led a cleanliness drive at the statue of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar at Sharda Buddh Vihar Temple, Colonel Colony in Ward 41. The programme also featured lighting of lamps and distribution of sweets among participants in the presence of Shakti Kendra Incharge Bubesh Sharma, Dr Jeet Bajala and Advocate Rajan Radhey.
Speaking on the occasion, Baru described Baba Saheb as a pioneer of social harmony who dedicated his life to the upliftment of the underprivileged, adding that the nation remains indebted to his contributions. He informed that the BJP would organize a series of programmes to mark the occasion, beginning with the cleanliness drive.
CMH College of Legal Studies organized a speech competition on the theme “Vision and Ideas of Dr B R Ambedkar.” The competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from 10 students representing The Law School, University of Jammu, Dogra Law College, Ashoka Law College, and CMH College of Legal Studies. The competition was judged by Kapil Sharma, Advocate, J&K High Court, and Yogita Sharma, Legal Educator.
At Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, an expert lecture on the life, ideas and contributions of Dr Ambedkar was organized under the guidance of Principal Prof Dr Kulvinder Kour. The resource person, Prof Amit Kumar Sharma, delivered an insightful and thought-provoking address, elaborating on Ambedkar’s vision of an inclusive and equitable society. The session concluded with an interactive segment where students actively engaged with the speaker.
Similarly, Government Degree College (GDC) RS Pura, under the aegis of IQAC, held an extension lecture to reflect on Ambedkar’s role as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a tireless advocate of human rights and social justice. The Principal highlighted the relevance of his ideas in contemporary India, while Dr Piyush Kant Sharma, Assistant Professor from GDC Ramnagar, delivered the keynote address. Faculty members also shared their perspectives, encouraging students to embrace education as a tool for social transformation.
Meanwhile, Government Degree College Ramban organized an inter-college seminar under the patronage of Principal Prof Romesh Kumar Atri. Babila Rakwal, Secretary of the Science and Technology Department, attended as the chief guest, while Varunjeet Singh Charak, Additional Deputy Commissioner Ramban, was the special guest. The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty representing various colleges of the district, with speakers presenting thoughtful views on constitutional rights, inclusive development, and the role of youth in realizing Ambedkar’s vision of an equitable society.
