JAMMU, July 20: Directorate of Agriculture Jammu hosted a special lecture on Protected Cultivation of Vegetables with special reference to tomato, capsicum and cucumber by Dr D K Singh, Scientist from GB Pant University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology.
Dr Singh, along with the team of scientists from SKUAST-J, including Prof R K Gupta, Head Department of Vegetables, Prof Ravi Samnotra of the Division of Vegetables & Floriculture, also interacted with the officers of Agriculture Department to increase and regulate the production of vegetables round the year in Jammu division.
Dr D K Singh said that to get a breakthrough in protected crop production technology, there is need to adopt location specific polygreen house designs. He said that the seedlings and crops of tomato, capsicum and cucurbits can be grown successfully under the Hi-Tech, Naturally Ventilated and Zero Energy Polyhouse Structures with efficient use of nutrients and water. High cost of imported varieties can be reduced if locality specific varieties with yield potentiality are developed by our researchers,” he added and advised the field functionaries for intensive training of trainers and prospective entrepreneurs for adoption of protected cultivation in vegetable and flower nursery raising as income generating ventures.
H K Razdan, Director of Agriculture, Jammu, said that Jammu region has immense potential for regulated availability and manifold increase in production of quality vegetables through the use of Protected Cultivation Technology. “The tomato production period can also be increased with the use of indeterminate tomato varieties and crops can be produced with minimum and precise use of pesticides. A Centre of Excellence for Vegetables (CEV) is being established at Talab Tillo, Jammu to demonstrate the technology to the farmers, entrepreneurs and field functionaries,” he said.
K S Sambyal, Joint Director of Agriculture (Inputs), Bulesh Zutshi, Joint Director SLUB, C M Sharma, Deputy Director of Agriculture (Central), Sunil Koul, Deputy Director of Agriculture (Trainings), R L Bhagat, CAO, Jammu, Nand Kishore Sharma, CAO, Kathua and other officers of the department & scientists from SKUAST-J participated in the programme.
