JAMMU, Mar 3: The Upper House of the State Legislature today passed a resolution for creation of a separate division for Ladakh region of the State.
The Legislative Council member from Leh,  Nurboo Gialchan moved the resolution in the House for creation of separate division for Ladakh including Kargil and Leh districts.  At present Ladakh is under Kashmir Division. Another member from Kargil Aga Sayed Rizvi seconded the resolution.
Speaking on the issue, Gialchan batted strongly for carving out a separate Ladakh division in the backdrop of its distinguished cultural and geographical features. He said Ladakh is  largest in area in J&K. The region remains cut off during winters and people had to suffer as they are forced to move to Srinagar for their works in the Divisional headquarters. Air travel is too, costly and the poor people from Ladakh can not afford it. Therefore, creation of  separate Division was must for the welfare of Ladakhis, he maintained.
Minister for Planning Ajay Sadhotra explained  on behalf of Government and asked the member to withdraw but  Aga Sayed Rizvi and several other members supported the resolution and later, it was adopted by the Legislative Council  and put to vote by the Vice Chairman Ajat Shatru Singh.
Two other resolutions, moved by Council members Bashir Ahmed Magray and Dr B A Veeri, were withdrawn after assurance from the Government. Minister for Tourism G A Mir was responding.
Mr Magray’s resolution was regarding implementation of the Ribbon Development Act, while the resolution moved by Dr Veeri was about creation of separate, seasonal and temporary administrative set-up for smooth conduct of the Shr Amarnath Yatra.
Mr Mir assured the members to identify the officers at the districts who will look into the routine issues of the local public during Yatra and a list of such officers will also be displayed at the headquarters so that they may not skip on the pretext of Yatra duty.
