Land Acquisition Bill tabled in LS; Oppn stages walkout

NEW DELHI :  The government today introduced the   controversial Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in  Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement(Amendment) Bill  in the Lok Sabha amid strong objections by the Opposition, which  finally led to their walkout.
As soon as Minister for Rural Development Rao Birender Singh sought the permission of Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to table the Bill, the Opposition members were on their feet demanding that the Bill be withdrawn.
However, the Speaker and the Minister said they would listen to their views during the discussion on the Bill. But Members were unrelenting. Amid uproar created by them, the Speaker  asked the Minister to introduce the Bill, which he did.    The Bill replaces an Ordinance issued on December 31, last year which amended the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
The Act outlines the process to be followed when land is acquired for a public purpose.
