LAHDC, TT flag-off potato seed trucks for free distribution

LEH, May 6: Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and TATA Trust (TT) in partnership with NABARD, Indian Army, SVP Private Limited, LNP, LEHO and LEG today flagged-off three trucks with potato seeds airlifted from Chandigarh for free distribution to Nang, Sakmo and Umla villages to ensure sustainable development based on agriculture.
CEC, LAHDC Dr Sonam Dawa while addressing the gathering said that giving priority to agriculture sector, LAHDC in collaboration with TATA Trust has taken the first step towards reviving ancestral occupation of farming complement by wise utilization of modern technology in developing the agricultural sector ensuring sustainable development. He said that the villages of Nang, Stakmo and Umla have been selected by TT on grounds of soil and geographical suitability for potato production.
He urged the villagers to make effective use of these potato seeds ensuring high productivity of potatoes and maximum usage of agricultural lands as past practice of our ancestors.
Major General AS Choudary ensured to give every possible support from Indian Army whenever needed by civil population. He expressed hope to fulfill the needs of all the essential commodities grown or produced in Leh from local market through such agriculture development initiatives to their as well as local’s benefit.
Abhay Gandhi, Head Livelihoods, TATA Trust said that Leh has been identified as a special zone by TT and a special assistance programme of Rs 3.5 crore has been sanctioned for Leh district under which they have take agricultural development on priority.
He said that their objective is to develop farming occupation and ensure prosperity of small farmers through what they technically called end to end value change. Another focus he said is to work on the major influence of Army in the region for developmental aspects in Leh district and that’s the reason they are continuing with their past slogan, ‘Prosperous Kisan, Healthy Jawan’.
Sarpanch Nang, ECs, Councilors, SSP Leh, Army officials, Government officials, representatives from NGOs, Ama Tsogspa and villagers were also present on the occasion.
