Ladakh remembers Sonam Wangyal on 18th death anniversary

LEH, Nov 10:  Wangyal Memorial Committee (SWMC) organized a special prayer for Sonam Wangyal at his memorial Chorten (Stupa) near Degree College here to pay homage to the late leader on his 18th death anniversary today.
The function was attended by religious heads, political heads, kin, relatives and well wishers of the leader.
On the occasion monks of Spituk Monastery recited special prayers for the peace of late leader and after observing two minutes silence offered ‘Khataks’ at his memorial Stupa.
LAHDC CEC Dr Sonam Dawa in his speech said that Wangyal laid the foundation of democracy system in Ladakh. He also conveyed the remembrance message of Ladakh MP Thupstan Chhewang and Ministers Chering Dorjay on the death anniversary.
To pay tribute to the late leader Dr Dawa assured to name the Skalzangling to Agling Road after the late leader and promised to extend support to develop the memorial site to make it greenery.
Dr Dawa also mentioned about the purpose of Ladakh Spal-Rnams Tuston celebration to pay tribute to such leaders.
Ladakh Buddhist Association President Tsewang Thinles in his speech advice to hold daylong seminars so that younger generation must have knowledge about the contributions about such leaders. “If we failed to remember their contribution then there will be no one in future who will work for the society”, he added.
Anjuman Imamiya President Asharf Ali while highlighting the contribution of late Sonam Wangyal said that it will be rich tribute to recommend him for a suitable award.
Former Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam President Sheikh Saif U-din mentioned about the late leader contribution towards communal harmony.
Christian Association President Dechen Chamga is his speech termed the Wangyal era as an important part of Ladakhi history.
Wangyal eldest son Thupstan Wangyal while presenting the vote of thanks said that his father used to laid emphasis on women education.
Earlier, while presenting the welcome speech SWMC Convener Tashi Targais Dimbir highlighted the contribution made by late Sonam Wangyal under the aegis of late Kushok Bakula Rinpochey. He urged the public to follow his footsteps to take Ladakh towards new heights. Targais urged LAHDC CEC to recommend for suitable awards and also requested him to name the Spituk stadium on his name.
On the occasion, SWMC distributes clothes to the inmates of Bal Asharm Hostel.
