JAMMU, July 9: Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kathua and Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu were awarded during the Zonal Workshop of KVKs of Zone-1 recently organized by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi through virtual mode.
KVK Kathua was conferred with the prestigious Best State KVK, whereas KVK Reasi won Best Presentation Award.
The activities of KVK Kathua were acknowledged by experts from ICAR which included success story of Rajkarni, a women entrepreneur, mushroom growers, pig farming entrepreneurs and introduction of high yielding varieties. Besides, the prestigious projects of KVK Kathua funded by Govt, such as Attracting & Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA), National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) also received appreciation. The prominent role of KVK in disseminating and increasing area under Pusa Basmati 1121 in the district vis a vis increased adoption of judicious use of pesticides for control of diseases like yellow rust was also recognized.
KVK Reasi presented detail view about activities like adoption of organic farming cluster, work on lemon grass oil, adoption of floriculture, poultry farming and promoting self-help groups for achieving sustainability of the farming community.
The awards were confirmed during the valedictory session by Dr Rajbir Singh, Director ICAR, Agricultural Technology and Research Institute, Zone 1, Ludhiana. Vice Chancellor SKUAST Jammu, Prof J P Sharma congratulated KVK Kathua, headed by Dr Vishal Mahajan and KVK Reasi headed by Dr Banarsi Lal.
The awards were based on the work carried out by KVKs of Union territories of Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir, states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab during 2019-20. Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Government of India, had inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Dr T Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) and DG (ICAR), New Delhi and Dr A K Singh, DDG (Agril Ext), ICAR, New Delhi.
