JAMMU, July 22: Following the intervention of  Governor N N Vohra, the University of Kashmir has also adopted  Justice Verma Commission recommendations on Teacher Education and  therefore enhanced the duration of  B Ed/ B PEd and M Ed courses to two years from the current academic session thus bringing uniformity with the Jammu University.
A formal order in this regard was issued today by the Kashmir University in suppression of the earlier notifications for fresh admission to the B Ed courses this session.
“In pursuance of the adoption of the recommendations of Justice Verma Commission as per final Plan of Action approved by the Supreme Court of India, it is notified for the information of all candidates  who have applied or are desirous  to apply for admission to B Ed/ B PEd and M Ed programmes through  University  Department or Government/ Private Colleges, that the duration of the aforementioned courses from the current academic session 2015-16 shall be of two years,” said the notification number (Admission-B.Ed/B PEd/M Ed)DDA-KU/2015, dated 22nd July 2015.
Other modalities  regarding intake capacity, fee structure, syllabi etc for the course shall be notified separately, the notice added.
Uniformity in the course duration is a victory of the Jammu University affiliated private B Ed colleges, which were strongly protesting against double standards for the same course through two universities having same Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and the Ministry of Higher Education.
Pertinent to mention that Jammu University has already adopted Justice Verma Commission recommendations on Teacher Education making the course duration for B Ed/ B PEd and M Ed two years from this session. The JU affiliated private B Ed colleges had apprehension that difference in course duration would severely affect their students as well as the number of admissions in their institutions.
Commissioner Secretary Higher Education, Sarita Chouhan told the Excelsior that  on the direction of  Governor,  she convened a meeting of the Vice-Chancellors of  Jammu University and Kashmir University yesterday  and it was decided there that both the universities would have uniform course duration from this session.
Earlier, the Minister of State for Education, Priya Sethi took up the issue with Governor N N Vohra  and vigorously pursued the case of  Jammu based B Ed colleges.
