Kremlin criticises Trump’s Iran blockade, warns of market fallout; signals openness to mediation

MOSCOW, Apr 13 : The Kremlin on Monday criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a blockade on Iranian ports, warning of continued disruption to global markets while maintaining that several aspects of the move remain unclear.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the development would likely have sustained economic repercussions. “Such actions will likely continue to negatively impact international markets. This can be assumed with a high degree of certainty,” he told reporters, adding that Moscow would avoid detailed assessments until more clarity emerges.

Peskov also cautioned that the situation in West Asia remains volatile. “It is still far from being resolved,” he said, while expressing hope that the crisis would not escalate back into open conflict.

On Russia’s earlier proposal to take custody of Iranian uranium under a broader nuclear arrangement, Peskov said the offer remains on the table despite not being accepted so far. “Russia remains open to offering its help,” he noted.

Separately, media reports have suggested that Russia has been assisting Iran with intelligence related to US military deployments, as well as sharing advanced drone tactics derived from its conflict in Ukraine. While these claims remain unverified officially, they come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin has positioned Moscow as a potential mediator, holding a series of calls with Gulf leaders to explore diplomatic pathways.

In a parallel development, Russian presidential aide Nikolai Patrushev accused NATO of expanding “anti-Russian infrastructure” in the Black Sea region under the cover of the “Sea Shield 2026” exercises, Sputnik reported.

“Romania has been chosen as the main springboard for these manoeuvres aimed at confronting Russia,” Patrushev said, signalling Moscow’s growing concern over NATO’s regional posture.

During talks in Moscow with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Putin expressed confidence that both countries would be able to stabilise and expand bilateral trade despite recent fluctuations.

He identified energy, space, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals as key sectors for future cooperation, adding that ongoing intergovernmental efforts would help ensure growth over the course of the year.
