NEW DELHI, Mar 24: A delegation of Kashmiri Pandit Conference led by its president Kundan Kashmiri called on Chief Election Commissioner of India and submitted a memorandum to him demanding freeing the elections from criminals, money and muscle power.
Turning CEC’s attention towards rising corruption in the country the delegation said that it was the root cause for criminization of politics and demanded that the corrupt elements and criminals be debarred from contesting elections.
It said the people of the country are hopeful that the Election Commission (EC) will fully exercise its powers under Article 324 of the Constitution in this regard.
It said such a drastic step taken by ECI would ensure holding of free and fair elections in the country in future also. By using the money and muscle power the politicians even deprive the peaceful citizens to cast their votes and this in turn is a great human rights violation also, the delegation added.
Highlighting the problems of displaced Pandits who are facing it difficult to cast their votes due to the cumbersome procedure adopted by ECI it alleged that this way the majority of them is being deprived of in casting their right to vote.
The delegation made an appeal to Election Commission to look into the matter at the earliest to enable them to use their right of franchise at par with other citizens of India. There is also need of granting at least three Constituencies in-exile for the displaced people of Kashmiri Pandits, it added.
