JAMMU, Aug 27: A meeting of Kisan Mazdoor Union (KMU)—a body of workers engaged in power projects of Kishtwar, was held under the chairmanship of the Union president, Rakesh Kumar Thakur and General Secretary, Naseeb Singh.
Problems faced by the workers of Kishtwar power projects were discussed in the meeting.
Speakers in the meeting claimed exploitation of workers and non-implementation of Labour Laws in the projects being constructed by Central Government’s public sector giant NHPC.
It was alleged that the wages are being paid to the workers as per J&K government’s minimum wage rates.
The speakers in the meeting claimed partiality in granting allowances by Jay Pee company and alleged that there is unnecessary police intervention to harass the workers and their representatives which has created an atmosphere of terror among poor workers on the behest of “moneyed construction companies.”
The Union leaders also said, since the projects are being funded by the Central Government and their major stake holder who controls these is NHPC so under the law minimum wages of Central Government are applicable here.
Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) General Secretary, Ashok Choudhary and Harbans Choudhary, senior BMS leader were also present in the meeting and they appealed J&K LG, Manoj Sinha to intervene and asked the management of these power projects to implement proper wage laws.
