KATHUA, Aug 21: Kisan Sabha held a one day convention at Sachara in tehsil Billawar of Kathua district near here, today. Farmers from various villages of tehsils Billawar, Lohai-Malhar, Ramkot and Mahanpur participated in large numbers in the convention.
President of the Kisan Sabha, Hari Chand Jalmeria presided over it. Representatives of Panchayat bodies also participated. Th. Rashpal Singh from Kalakot-Rajouri was the chief guest. The convention was addressed, among others by Punnu Ram Jamodia (founder Member), HS Lalotra, Sarpanch Makhan Jamodia, Sarpanch, Krishan Chand, BDC Billawar, Chairman, Ashok Kumar, Vinod Raeothia, Thakur Dass, Joginder Singh and Raj Kumar.
The speakers highlighted the problems being faced by the farmers of the area which included growing monkey menace, bad condition of rural roads, massive unemployment of rural youth, poor condition of health and education facilities in rural areas, scarcity of funds in Panchayats, no adequate public transport facility in remote areas. The issue of separate district for Billawar was also strongly raised by the speakers.
Kisan Sabha president, Hari Chand Jalmeria said that agriculture is neglected area for the Government despite the fact that more than seventy percent of the population of India resides in villages. Adequate research for growth of agriculture and allied sectors and profitable prices for agriculture products are lacking. This is resulting into lack of interest of youth in agriculture. In most of the areas of Jammu province, there is pandemic growth of monkeys and swine which destroy crops. No attention is being paid to provide irrigation facility to the farmers. The children of the farmers are finding no jobs in rural areas. He also highlighted the long pending demand for creating Billawar as separate district.
The convention demanded creation of Billawar district without wastage of further time. It was also decided to chalk out agitational programme on this issue.
The convention further demanded creation of Job opportunities for the children of farmers in rural areas in the agriculture related sectors, ensuring profitable prices for the agricultural products, ensuring adequate health, education, road facilities in rural areas and posting of staff in health and educational institutions located in villages.
