Srinagar, Oct 22: Due to the official apathy and the irresponsible attitude of the locals, the iconic ‘Khushhal Sarr’ has been turned into a garbage dump near Gil Kadal area of Srinagar.
Though the lake is in a bad shape across the areas it is flowing through, but its condition is pitiable at Gil Kadal where it flows under a small bridge.
It has been turned into a marsh due to the lack of cleaning of the lake by the authorities and at the same time, the locals have started dumping garbage into it due to which a portion of the lake has almost become lifeless.
While the locals accused the concerned authorities of not paying due attention towards the lake, they also accepted the fact that the locals living around the lake have been resorting to irresponsible attitude by dumping their daily garbage waste into the lake.
“Not only the concerned department is to be held accountable for the apathy of the Lake, the fault lies with the locals who are living in the vicinity as well. They have turned this lake into a garbage dump,” a local who identified himself as Abdul Rahim said.
The locals said that the water of the lake used to be pure and the lake used to be pristine, however, they lament that due to human greed and the official apathy, the lake has been turned into a lifeless entity.
“It is not that only the residents of this area who are littering around, the residents of other adjoining areas are also doing the same and at the end, it reaches here; the bridge here impedes its path and it all gets collected here,” another local of the area said.
Though, the locals of the area have written messages on the walls requesting the locals not to litter around the Lake, but, those messages, the locals said, have fallen on the deaf ears.
