Khan reviews working of Legal Metrology Deptt

JAMMU, Apr 22: Secretary Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department and Controller Legal Metrology, Baseer Ahmad Khan today reviewed the working of Legal Metrology Department in Jammu province.
During the meeting, Mr Khan was apprised about the revenue realization scenario and number of inspections carried out by the department in safeguarding the interests of the consumers against the malpractices adopted by unscrupulous traders.
He was informed that department realized Rs 94.99 lakh as a fee for authenticating the accuracy of weighing and measuring instruments and an amount of Rs 24.5 lakh was realized as composition money from 3063 erring traders under different provisions of law.
Addressing the officers, Mr Khan stressed for immediate need of fixing targets as per the actual establishments in the market and issued directions that within a month the process of identifying the establishments, which are presently not covered by the department in absence of complete database of the traders, should be completed.
The Controller also issued directions that the area of inspectors should be divided into zones and weekly monitoring of the duty performed by the inspectors should conducted at district level and a consolidated report with remarks must be submitted on monthly basis to the Controller’s office.
He also reviewed the functioning of laboratories at district level and issued directions that each inspector must be equipped with the latest equipments to maintain accuracy of measurements.
He was apprised about the under construction laboratory buildings and the Secretary directed that Housing Department be asked to complete the work within stipulated time.
The Controller directed that the consumer awareness programmes must be carried out at all districts in collaboration with Information Department to educate consumers about their rights and duties while making purchases in the markets. Similarly, traders must be made aware about the selling of good quality and exact quantity goods to the consumers.
The reorganization of the department and rationalization of jurisdiction of inspectors also came up for discussion during the meeting and Secretary issued directions for preparing a detailed note for the perusal of the administrative department.
