SRINAGAR:The national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic and heavy vehicles carrying Amarnath pilgrims.
The Sriangar-Leh national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir and Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu, were also through.
A traffic police official said traffic was suspended for more than six hours yesterday due to landslides, triggered by heavy rains. However, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway immediately pressed into service sophisticated machinery and men and cleared landslides.
He said the stranded vehicles, including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims, were cleared. ”Today, we allowed light vehicles from Srinagar and Jammu,” he said, adding heavy vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar. However, heavy vehicles, carrying Amarnath pilgrims will ply from both sides, he said. (AGENCIES)
