JUTA urges Govt to reconsider Cabinet decision on UIET

JAMMU, Feb 22: Expressing concern about career of the students of University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Jammu University Teachers Association has requested the Higher Education Department to reconsider its decision of taking over UIET, a constituent college of JU.
Seeking attention of all the stakeholders of the society as career of the students has been put on stake by the Government order, JUTA said that the parents have send their wards to an A+ University college and therefore asking them midway to shift to a Government college having no infrastructure, human resource in place and also an unconvincing chance of its approval from AICTE for the first batch of the students is not justified.
The JUTA meeting was convened by its president, Dr. Kuldeep S Charak, who threw light on the history of UIET.
It may be recalled that in the month of May, 2017, the Higher Education Department, Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir, requested the Universities of Kashmir and Jammu to run two Engineering Colleges as constituent colleges of the two universities, under RUSA scheme. Consequently the Engineering College with the University of Jammu was declared as University Institute of Engineering and Technology, a constituent college of JU.  A constituent college of the University is as good as any other teaching department of the University and accordingly the University started the admission process for UIET and successfully admitted 64 students as per JEE Mains score ( 47 students in  Civil Engg. and  17 students in Computer Science Engg.). By managing a temporary UIET campus at its main campus (till the building coming up at Janglote in Kathua Campus of JU was handed over to the University), the University started the first semester classes on September 11, 2017 with contractual faculty appointed as per AICTE guidelines and provided the laboratories of various Science Departments of the University for carrying out experiments in general/ common courses in the first semester. Moreover, entire finances of the said UIET are met by the University from its own resources. University being an established system was managing the institute professionally but unfortunately in December, 2017 HED through a Cabinet decision declared this UIET as Govt College of Engineering and Technology and asked the University to handover UIET to the Govt. for the reasons best known to HED and this is the point from where the fate of the students of UIET took an unfavorable turn.
