JAMMU, Oct 21: The senior most Judge of J&K High Court, Justice Virender Singh was today elevated as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.
According to the notification issued by Parveen Garg, Joint Secretary Union Minister of Law and Justice, in exercise of powers conferred by clause (1) of Aricle 217 of the Constitution of India, the President of India Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Justice Virender Singh, Judge of J&K High Court, as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office”.
Born on October 7, 1954, Justice Virender Singh after graduation from Government College, Rohtak, completed his Degree of Law from J V Jain College, Saharanpur. He entered the legal profession in June 1978 and practised mostly on criminal side besides dealing with cases under the Motor Vehicles Act and Hindu Marriage Act.
Up to year 1988, he practised at Rohtak and thereafter came to Chandigarh. He remained as Deputy Advocate General, Haryana firstly from May 1995 to April 1996 and then from July 1996 to January 1999. He was elevated as Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 2, 2002 and transferred to High Court of Jammu and Kashmir. He assumed charge of office on April 19, 2007 and functioned as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir from April 2, 2012 to June 8, 2012.
