JAMMU, Oct 31: Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu, under the aegis of Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) Jammu chapter, organized an expert lecture by Prof Davendra Singh Malik, Head, Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar, on the topic “Impact of Dam and Barrages on the “Mahseer Population Dynamics in Yamuna of Garhwal region”.
Prof Malik emphasized the role of dam and barrages and their environmental impacts on the diversity of various aquatic organisms in general and fish in particular. He narrated that during the commissioning of barrages and dams the rivers are mercilessly diverted and their faunal components are greatly disturbed particularly due to the destruction of feeding and breeding grounds of the fishes and other aquatic organisms. He suggested many ecological manipulations which may be very helpful in conserving the fishes and other organisms in these fragile ecosystems.
Earlier, Prof A.K Raina, HoD Environmental Sciences, introduced the speaker while Prof K K Sharma, Convener ISCA chapter, Jammu, spelled out objectives of Indian Science Congress Association. Dr Piyush Malaviya presented vote of thanks.
