JAMMU, May 21: The Department of Law, The Law School, and the Theatre Club, University of Jammu, jointly organised an awareness programme titled “Towards a Drug-Free J&K: Challenges and Strategies” at the University campus here today.
The programme aimed at spreading awareness regarding the harmful effects of drug abuse and promoting a healthy, responsible, and drug-free society in Jammu and Kashmir.
The programme was graced by Nikhil Rasgotra, Superintendent of Police, CID, CI, as the chief guest, and Kuljeet Singh, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Gandhi Nagar, as the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, the Nikhil Rasgotra, delivered an insightful address on the societal and psychological effects of drug addiction. He appreciated the initiative undertaken by the University and urged young people to channel their energy towards constructive goals, discipline, and self-growth rather than harmful addictions.
Dy SP Kuljeet Singh spoke extensively about the growing challenges posed by narcotics in society and stressed the importance of awareness, parental guidance, and youth engagement in preventing drug abuse. He encouraged students to become ambassadors of positive change within their communities.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Prof Manju Jamwal, Head and Dean, Department of Law, JU, highlighted the urgent need for collective social responsibility in combating drug abuse among youth.
A soulful Dogri poem on the theme of drug abuse was rendered by Madan Ji. The cultural segment featured a powerful skit titled “Nasha Ek Sazaa”, presented by students from Udhampur under the leadership of Prashant Khajuria and team. Another highlight was the short play “Jazba”, presented by the Theatre Club of JU under the direction of Ifra Kak.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Prof Seema Rohmetra, Director, The Law School, JU. The programme was attended by Prof Meena Sharma, Chairperson, UTSAAH; Dr Madhulika Singh, Co-ordinator, Theatre Club, University of Jammu; faculty members, students, theatre artists, and participants from various institutions.
The programme was compered by student mediators Lakshita Singh Chib and Vrinda Parihar. The Students’ Coordination Team, comprising Sunny Singh Rajput, Urvashi Thakur, Janvi Singh, Nitasha, Anuragh, Mohit, Sanya, and Kashish, along with Dr Bindu Sangra, Teacher-in-Charge, Law School, played key role in execution of the event.
