JU Law School organizes special lecture on ‘Constitution of J&K’

JAMMU, Nov 17: The Law School in Jammu University organized a special lecture on “The Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir: A perspective with reference to Constitution of India” by Prof Sudesh Kumar Sharma, Information Commissioner with the State Information Commission.
Prof S K Sharma, in his extensive and elusive lecture, discussed the legal aspect of accession of Jammu and Kashmir and desirability of the incorporation of the J&K Constitution. He apprised the students about the importance of the preamble outlining the objectives of the Constitution. He emphasized on special rights which have been granted to the permanent residents of J&K with regard to employment under the State, acquisition of immovable property in the State, settlement in the State and scholarship etc. He also discussed how greater autonomy has been enjoyed by the State and salient features of Article 370 which stipulates special status to permanent residents of the State.
Prof Sharma also apprised the students about the relevance of the fundamental rights and the semblance of the fundamental rights under the J&K and Indian Constitutions. He extensively discussed the importance of the directive principles of State policy and how the position in the J&K Constitution is well advanced to the position under the Indian Constitution. He further deliberated on all other distinguishing features of Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir including extent of executive and legislative power of the State.
Dr Sanjay Gupta, Director of The Law School, presented a formal welcome address and lauded contribution of Prof S K Sharma as the Academician and Information Commissioner with the State Information Commission.
Proceedings were conducted by Dr Seema Sharma.
This was followed by interactive session. The importance of the lecture was highlighted by the students namely Amit Virdi and Satvika Thakur while vote of thanks was delivered byVibhuti Narainia.
