JAMMU, May 18: Accelerating the momentum of their ongoing strike, the protesting class IV employees and Casual Labourers in Jammu University have announced to increase the duration of token protest being observed by them daily.
“From Wednesday onwards, the token protest will be observed for four hours from 10 a.m to 2 p.m during which the employees and workers will suspend work and hold demonstration on the campus,” informed Krishan Chand, president of Jammu University Non-Gazetted Employees Union, while talking to media persons, here today.
He alleged that the Jammu University authorities had forced them to resort to agitational path and now further intensifying the same. “Notwithstanding the written commitment by the Vice-Chancellor on February 18, 2013 that the Casual Labourers, who have completed seven years in service, would be regularized before the University Council meeting in April, no action has been taken so far on our demand,” he rued adding that the JU authorities were not even responding to their repeated reminders over the issue.
Pertinent to mention that the JU class IV employees and casual labourers are observing token strike for three hours daily by suspending work from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. They are demanding regularization of Casual Labourers who have completed seven years in service, removal of pay anomalies, promotion benefits etc.
NGEU general secretary Vijay Kumar urged the Chancellor N N Vohra (Governor) and Pro-Chancellor Omar Abdullah (Chief Minister) to personally intervene into the matter on humanitarian grounds as the protesting employees and workers have lost faith in the incumbent VC as well as his administration.
“Instead of solving the issue and redressing our grievances, the university administration is resorting to suppressive measures against us,” he alleged and appealed all the JU non-gazetted employees as well as Casual Labourers to   remain united under the banner of NGEU for taking the ongoing struggle to a logical conclusion.
