JU Advisory Committee meeting of Biotechnology held

JAMMU, Jan 10: A high level Advisory Committee meeting to monitor the progress of the DBT, Govt of India funded M Sc Biotechnology programme, was held under the chairmanship of Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu.
In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor apprised the members about the School of Biotechnology, its aims and objectives in particular and the University in general. The progress report for the period of 2015-2020 was presented by Prof Jyoti Vakhlu, Director of the school. Dr Meenakshi Munshi, Advisor, DBT and experts were of the opinion that since its inception in, the school has come a long way and has created a niche for itself at national and international level in the area of Biotechnology. Experts opined that the faculty should emphasize on the local problems that can be solved by Biotechnological interventions. Experts suggested to incorporate mentor-mentee program and faculty development programmes focusing on building authentic skills.
Recommendations were made to have a MoU with the Ministry of Skill Development for certification of the skills learned by the students. Fields visits were strongly recommended so that the students of Biotechnology are made aware of the biological resource and diversity around them. The experts from the industry appreciated the quality of the students and right away promised their placement in their respective institution and also other industries.
In closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor appreciated advice of the experts and directed the faculty to take action on recommendation. Vote of thanks was presented by Dr B K Bajaj, Associate Professor of the School. Among others, Prof Dinabandhu Sahoo, Department of Botany, University of Delhi, Dr Rajesh Kumar Singh, G M Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd, Dr Mrutyunjay Saur, CEO, KIIT Technology, Business Incubator, Prof Rajni Dhingra, Registrar JU, Prof Naresh Padha, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Prof Roopama Gandotra, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Dr Manoj Singh Rohilla, Scientist-E, DBT, Govt of India, Dr Sanjana Kaul, Associate Professor and Dr Ritu Mahajan, Assistant Professor of the School of Biotechnology were also present in the meeting.
