Jora pays surprise visit to STPs

SRINAGAR, May 16: To keep the waters of world famous Dal and Negeen lakes of the Valley clean, fresh and pollution free, the Minister for Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies Nawang Rigzin Jora today conducted surprise visits of STP Brari Numbal and STP Nallah, Amir Khan and took stock of the present status of the both the Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs).
The Minister was accompanied by Chairman LAWDA, Irfan Shah and other senior officers of various concerned agencies.
Mr. Jora while going through the plan and on spot inspection of various functioning units of STP Brari Numbal which is coming up at a cost of Rs. 22 crore, with a capacity of 16.10 MLD. It was told that that STP would be functional within two months. The Minister was informed that laying of pipes at Dawood Khaki Bridge and Munarabad area is in progress. He was told that almost 99.5% pipelines have been already laid and remaining work would be completed very soon. He was further told that out of Rs.22 crore almost 85% of funds have been spent on the project
The Minister also visited STP Nallah Amir Khan which has a capacity of 5.4 MLD. The STP is presently functional and catering Omar Colony (B) Batshah Mohalla, Mughal Mohalla, Ashraf Mohalla, Bhagwanpora areas.
Later, the Minister also conducted a tour of Dal lake including the areas of Nageen, Pokharibal and Amidakadal bridge where he was informed that 1.20 lakh cubic meters have been weeded out while 48 lakh square Kilometer have been skimmed and 4.25 lakh square meters have been wedded out from lilies and other unwanted grass.
The Minister was further informed that presently five machines have been put in place for de-weeding from the lake which includes 2 new water masters from USA and 3 Old Harvester Machine. Besides machines, 400 labours have also been engaged for this de-weeding manually, he was told.
The Minister also inspected settling Basin for Talibal nallah. He also inspected the construction work of the protection walls of Shalimar channel on which 40 lakh has been spent.
Later, the Minister paid a visit newly Nishat park being developing by LAWDA at a cost of Rs. 1.37 crore. The Minister also took around of old Brain where he was shown sewerage pipes connected with STP.
Mr. Jora inaugurated Shikara Ghat, (Jetty) near Zabarban Park Bulward road constructed at a cost of Rs. 13 lakh. The Jetty will provide livelihood to more than 60 families of estate Nandpora, Karpora Abi area.
