JMC team seizes 50 kg substandard meat, fines erring sellers

JAMMU, Feb 20: On the directions of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Commissioner, Avny Lavasa, a team of JMC visited different areas of Jammu city to inspect the sale of wholesome and good quality meat and meat byproducts.
The JMC team comprised of Municipal Veterinary Officer, Dr. Sushil Kumar Sharma and Health Officer JMC, Dr. Sanjogita Soodan along with others.
The inspection started from CPO Chowk and proceeded to meat shops at New Plot, Amphalla, Janipur, Roop Nagar, Durga Nagar, Batindi, Sidhra, Narwal etc.
During checking various meat shops, chicken shops and fish outlets were inspected and about 50 kg of substandard meat was seized and later on disposed-off properly and a fine of Rs. 47,800 was imposed on erring meat sellers for selling unstamped and substandard meat.
Notices were also served to various meat shop owners to install black/red colour glasses at their shops and to stop hanging meat outside shops.
Meat and chicken shop owners were instructed to keep separate bins with black polythene to collect the daily waste generated on account of refused/inedible meat and chicken parts for further proper disposal through JMC vehicles.
Municipal Veterinary Officer and Health Officer appealed all the shopkeepers dealing with meat and chicken products to maintain hygienic environment in and around their shops and adhere to the directions and guidelines issued by JMC from time to time so that good quality meat shall reach consumers.
In a handout JMC has stated that such drives will continue in near future and strict action shall be initiated against defaulters.
