JMC in deep slumber as open pit on road turns death trap

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, June 6: An open pit lying unattended for the last several months on the road in Chinore area of Roopnagar-Bantalab main road, just near J&K Bank Branch and an Ashram, has virtually turned into a `death trap’ not only for general public but also the cattle.
Hardly a day passes when there is no accident. Many times bikes, cars or other vehicles fell into the `trap’, inadvertently. There was a heavy lid to cover this large pit but it has been thrown away after a heavy vehicle struck with force several weeks ago.
There is no street light in the nearby area and moreover, when there is power failure, several elderly people or children fell into it. Many times people were injured after falling into this pit which is about 4 ft by 5ft in size and about eight feet in depth. Hardly, three days ago, a car fell into the pit and lower portion of the engine was badly damaged. Its chamber was broken baldy. Many times cows and calves fell into the pit and they were pulled out after hard efforts by the local shopkeepers and passersby.
The local residents brought this matter into the notice of concerned Corporator and even to the notice of Mayor JMC but the pit was not filled up or covered. They alleged that authorities are in deep slumber. It actually needs permanent solution. The locals said that this pit had been dug by a Telecommunication company, about 6-7 years ago. They have laid cables but they never bothered about the public inconvenience.
The locals demanded that company should be penalized for the accidents and sufferings caused to the public. They demanded that authorities should cover this death trap permanently and remove thick lid lying there for creating obstacle on the road side for general public.
