JMC, HCCB, UNDP launch ‘Plastic Lao Thaila Pao’ campaign

JAMMU, Dec 16: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited (HCCB) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) joined hands to launch the “Plastic Lao Thaila Pao” campaign at Bahu Plaza, here today.
This month long campaign was inaugurated by Chander Mohan Gupta Mayor, JMC and Advocate Purnima Sharma Deputy Mayor, JMC in presence of Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, Baldev Singh Billoria, Chairman Health and Sanitation Committee JMC, Avny Lavasa, Commissioner JMC, Tina Mahajan Secretary, JMC, Prabjot Sodhi, Head Circular Economy UNDP, Sanjeev Arora CEO Regional and Urban Development Agency and Mohammad Ameen Guroo City Lead UNDP.
This campaign which is being organized by implementation partner to UNDP “Regional and Urban Development Agency Jammu” is part of ongoing effort to spread awareness on the need for responsible plastic use and its disposal. As part of the campaign, a mini material recovery stall has been set up in the JDA premises of Bahu Plaza to promote sustainable waste management practices.
The eco-exchange stall will be operative on all days till January 15, 2021 from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm wherein public and shopkeepers would be engaged to bring pieces of plastic and exchange the same for Thailas (cloth bags) that are environmentally friendly.
As such, people are given one cloth bag for each set of 10 PET bottles, 10 pieces of mixed plastic products, 20 pieces of multi-layered plastics (of at least 100 grams and above), 20 small mixed plastic products or 15 pieces of plastic bags (of normal size of 1 to 2 kilograms carrying capacity).
The campaign also drives home the point that plastics have inherent value and they need to be recovered and recycled.
A nukkad natak managed by IEC team of JMC under SBM was organized wherein team disseminated message on managing plastic responsibly and at the end participants took the pledge to support sustainable waste management practices.
